9. What is the difference between Watts and Lumen?

Answer

When you purshase a incandescent or CFL light you usually know how many Watts you need, however the number of Watts doesn't tell us anything about the light output. That's why LED lights are specified with the number of Lumen, a photometric entity. This means that the human eye is taken into account when calculating the lumen output of a light source. LUUMS places a comparison of how many Watts in LED is equal to how many Watts incandescent of CFL light on all her retail LED light packages.

Besides Lumen we also know Lux and Candela, the diagram below shows the differences and relations between the photometric entities.

Differences Lumen, Lux en Candela

  1. Lumen (lm) is  the sum of the radiated light irrespective to the direction in which it radiates.
  2. Lux (lx) is the quantity light (lumen) that on a certain surface comes. 1 Lux = 1 Lumen/m2
  3. Candela (cd) is the quantity light (lumen) in a certain three-dimensional angle (steradian). 1cd = 1 lumen in a space angle of 1 steradian.
